Common procedures that are donated include hernia repair to prevent incarcerated hernias, cataract & pterygium removal to prevent blindness, and colonoscopy for above-average risk patients to prevent colon cancer through targeted polyp removal.
How Our Volunteers Help
Our Process
1. Community Clinics
Patients visit community clinics for care. Clinics send referrals to our program for uninsured people in need of outpatient specialty care.
2. Operation Access
We screen the patient for medical and financial eligibility. If eligible, we send the referral to the physician volunteer.
3. Physician Volunteers
Physicians review the referral. When a physician accepts a case, the patient is scheduled for care. If a case cannot be matched with a physician, we inform the patient and clinic.
4. Pre-Procedure
Consults, pre-ops, tests, labs, scans, etc., are scheduled by the specialist’s team prior to the procedure. We coordinate appointments with patients and provide language interpretation.
5. Procedure
Outpatient procedures through our program are scheduled the same way procedures are scheduled for insured patients. Our staff ensures patients are well informed and ready for the procedure.
6. Post-Procedure
Physician shares results and schedules any necessary post-op appointments. We inform the patient’s community clinic how to request medical records.
